Cold Brew Coffee Maker

Trends In Coffee

One summer about five years ago I had my first cold brew coffee that was brewed using the drip method. It was smooth and strong and it stood out from every other cold brew I had before. It stood out because there was no bitterness to the drink, it was a complete and comforting experience. I decided to make my own cold brew coffee maker and the journey has brought me to this, second prototype phase.

The first prototype was just a proof of concept, I ordered a bunch of lab glass and built a simple frame. I bought some San Francisco Bay coffee beans, ground them and proceeded to find the proper ratios and drip timing. It took me a few days to get everything right but when I did, Woah, it was the best coffee that I had ever made.

Of course this concentrated coffee should be diluted with equal parts water but I tried it without dilution and found a whole new level of a pure, smooth and clean buzz.

A problem existed in height of this first round of prototyping. It towered at 24”.The average countertop to cabinet distance is 18”. If this was going to be something to become a part of the kitchen it would need to lose more than 6”.

Of course this would not be possible with the original set up, so I set out to build a design that would fit a standard kitchen countertop while looking sleek, modern, even minimal. The next phase of prototyping is soon to be started.

Of course many parts need to be made, combined and tested before anything can be finalized but the genesis is near…
